AI in Education: Pedagogically Effective, Ethically Responsible, and Practical for Schools

Course Overview

This compact Erasmus+ course supports teachers in using Artificial Intelligence (AI) effectively, responsibly, and directly in the classroom. The focus is on practical teaching methods, clear quality standards, ethics and data protection, as well as concrete transfer products that can be applied in both classroom practice and school development.

Generative AI (e.g., chatbots and AI assistants) is transforming lesson planning, material creation, feedback, and assessment. At the same time, it raises important questions about learning effectiveness, transparency, academic integrity, bias, and data protection. This course combines practical pedagogy with ethical decision-making skills and helps schools integrate AI in ways that improve learning—not merely make processes faster.

Throughout the course, we will explore three guiding questions:

  • How can I design AI-supported learning activities that foster competencies and make learning processes visible?
  • How can I use AI for differentiation, feedback, and assessment without relinquishing pedagogical responsibility?
  • How can I establish clear policies and guidelines to ensure that AI is used fairly, safely, and transparently within the school?

Benefits

Participants will:

  • Build a field-tested collection of classroom prompts and quality assurance checklists that can be used immediately.
  • Create, adapt, and differentiate AI-supported teaching materials according to proficiency level, language needs, and vocational contexts.
  • Develop formative feedback and assessment formats, including rubrics, exit tickets, and assessment criteria grids.
  • Recognize common AI-related issues such as hallucinations, bias, and false precision, and use them as learning opportunities.
  • Gain practical knowledge of essential ethical and data protection standards without requiring extensive legal expertise.
  • Leave the course with a complete AI-enhanced teaching sequence and a mini implementation plan for their school.

The Sending Organisation / School will benefit from:

  • An immediately usable collection of teaching resources, templates, and classroom activities.
  • A sustainable, pedagogically sound framework for AI integration, including policies, communication strategies, and pilot implementation plans.
  • A peer-to-peer transfer concept, including a mini professional development model that participants can use to train colleagues and multiply impact within their institutions.

Methodology & Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the fundamental principles of AI in teaching and learning, including its strengths, limitations, and common error patterns.
  2. Develop effective prompts based on learning objectives using a structured design process: learning goal → task → output criteria → reflection.
  3. Create and adapt teaching materials and learning activities with AI support, taking language sensitivity and differentiation into account.
  4. Design transparent and learning-oriented formative assessment and feedback routines supported by AI.
  5. Address ethical challenges such as bias, manipulation, deepfakes, and academic integrity through authentic classroom scenarios.
  6. Develop a school-based Minimum Viable AI Policy to support pilot implementation and sustainable transfer.

Learning Approach

  • Hands-on Learning: Every session concludes with a tangible product such as a template, prompt, teaching material, rubric, or policy component.
  • Peer Coaching: Participants work in pairs or small groups and provide feedback based on clearly defined criteria.
  • Reflective Practice: Ethical dilemmas and value-based discussions are used to strengthen professional judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Transfer to Practice: Each participant develops a realistic implementation step, progressing from a pilot initiative to broader school-wide adoption.
